Roughly fifty cars have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postboxes were vandalized, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they announced in a release.
Police report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.
The liquid had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they reported.
Law enforcement then located multiple other marked vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report early analysis suggest the liquid was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; investigators are not yet aware of any physical harm in connection with the event," they added.
City officials said they were working "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for tips.
An important political figure said the incident left him stunned and required to be solved quickly.
"This event hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a shooter focusing on people of foreign heritage in 2020.
