European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related legal developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked attempts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the action was “another example” of tying federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international strategies.
