An defense official has stated that the MoD is currently looking into the potential threats posed by Chinese-made vehicles, and staff have been instructed to avoid talking about classified matters in all vehicles.
Security Advice for Defence Personnel
In a recent appearance on LBC, a defence minister addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to discuss classified information while riding in Chinese cars.
He explained that the ministry is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but emphasised that safety is a concern in every modern vehicles.
Our department has a collection of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug MoD technology into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, due to the growing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential conversations in secure locations. This is a prudent and sensible thing for anyone concerned about safety.
After it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using every Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: That is exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”
Wider Security Background
The revelation follows claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable buses and cause chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly directing laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.
The broader security environment underscores the significance of strong measures and caution in all areas of government activities, from vehicle usage to communication practices.
